The talk will include personal reflections on the label “alien enemies”\, Tuna Canyon and other detention facilities. The Tuna Canyon experience\, as both fact and metaphor\, will be viewed in relationship to the world climate of today. \nAbout the Speaker\nSigrid B. Toye holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.   She loves all things creative: the visual arts\, drama\, filmmaking\, writing and her two grown children\, both working artists.  She currently writes for Voice Magazine.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by Dr. Elizabeth Stewart about her latest book. \nFree entry for member/ $5 Guests\nReservation Required.\nClick here to make a reservation.\n \nNo Thanks Mom: The Top Ten Objects Your Kids Do NOT Want (and what to do with them) is an honest and humorous exploration of the generational differences in the households and possessions of Millennials/Gen-Xers and their Boomer parents. The central conflict is that most of the Boomers’ grown kids are refusing the family heirlooms that have been saved for them. \nDr. Stewart\, a certified appraiser (and SBHM docent!) discusses the top 10 objects that younger generations do not want as “gifts” from the homes of their parents and grandparents. She finds a consistent pattern of familial tensions over objects that older relatives have saved for the kids\, wishing and hoping to pass on the beloved family treasures. If you’ve tried to pass on fine china\, tableware\, linens\, fine porcelain figurines\, silver-plated objects\, ornate rugs\, or heavy\, dark furniture to a Millennial\, you know it’s not so easy. \nThe problem\, Dr. Stewart says\, is the intergenerational difference in the concept of value and ownership. The answer\, she explains\, is to understand the new and changing concept of home\, and to follow her specific remedies for each category of objects. \nStewart reviews each of the 10 object groups and gives the current owners ideas on how to pass them on. She provides an easy way to survey your belongings and offers advice on how to verify value and\, where there is a market\, how to put your items in play. \n\nDr. Stewart is a certified member of the Appraisers Association of America and a 30-year veteran of “stuff.” She analyzes art and antiques for estate planning to ascertain value\, and is one of the few appraisers nationally qualified in donation appraisals for IRS deduction purposes. \nShe advises on the best places to sell “stuff\,” and why certain things are worth keeping. Her favorite career challenges have included the late Jonathan Winters estate of 160\,000 objects\, a tech executive’s university donation of 20 truckloads of virtual reality\, and a 50-year historical research archive that a Guggenheim fellow donated to UCSB. \nHer column\, “Ask the Appraiser\,” appears weekly in the Santa Barbara News Press under the pseudonym “The Golddigger.” She also hosts a weekly radio show covering the arts on KZSB. Her first book\, Collect Value Divest: The Savvy Appraiser\, relates tales of the various categories of objects that people both collect and want to sell. \nDr. Stewart holds a PhD from Pacifica in Mythological Studies with an emphasis on Material Culture. Her dissertation\, titled The Material Image: Why Collectors Collect\, is a scholarly approach to consumers\, collectors\, connoisseurs and hoarders.

DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to welcome the exhibition\, Only The Oaks Remain: The Story of Tuna Canyon Detention Center. \nRSVP Appreciated\nAttendees will be treated to wine\, nibbles and performances by the Togen Taiko Group and classical dance by Nancy Hayata. \nOnly the Oaks Remain tells the true stories of those targeted as dangerous enemy aliens and imprisoned in the Tuna Canyon Detention Station\, located in the Tujunga neighborhood of Los Angeles\, by the US Department of Justice during World War II. \nPhotographs\, letters\, and diaries bring the experiences of prisoners—who included Japanese\, German\, and Italian immigrants and Japanese Peruvians—to life. \nDuring the decade before World War II\, the US government compiled lists of people seen as potential risks to national security. When the war began\, Presidential Proclamations 2525\, 2526\, and 2527 authorized the FBI and other agencies to arrest such individuals—mostly spiritual\, educational\, business\, and community leaders from the Japanese\, German\, and Italian immigrant communities. The government also rounded up Japanese and other individuals who had previously been forcibly removed from Latin America. \nFollowing the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7\, 1941\, the US Department of Justice took over a vacated Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the Tujunga neighborhood of Los Angeles and converted it into a detention station by installing twelve-foot-high barbed wire fences\, guard posts\, and flood lights. The Tuna Canyon Detention Station became one of many initial confinement sites set up by the government. Targeted individuals were quickly arrested in their homes\, leaving behind confused and frightened families; most detainees were later sent to Department of Justice or Army internment camps. \nOnly the Oaks Remain commemorates the history of the Tuna Canyon Detention Station and seeks to educate the public about the violation of civil rights that took place there. \nThe Museum will simultaneously open Displaced: The Detention & Internment of Santa Barbarans During WWII. \nThe opening is free and open to the public.  RSVP appreciated to reception@sbhistorical.org \n\nSpecial thank you to:\nSigrid Toye\nIn Memory of Emmy E. The film also recounts the story of her mother\, Mary Yee\, the last native speaker of the Chumashan Barbareño language\, and her work to preserve the language with linguist John P. Harrington\, which Ernestine has continued with Dr. John Johnson at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The story bears profound implications for how we view the objects in the exhibition and demonstrates the continued perseverance of the Chumash peoples. \nScreening begins at 5:30 pm. \nThe Museum will also be open for 1st Thursday from 5-8pm.

Readers will also meet a quintet of colorful characters whose enthusiasm\, vision\, and work created the underpinnings of today’s town and contributed greatly to Santa Barbara’s coming of age. \n\nAbout the Author/ Speaker\nFor the past 12 years\, Hattie Beresford has written a local history column for the Montecito Journal called “The Way It Was\,” where she has been able to indulge her long-standing interest in the people and events of Santa Barbara’s past which determined its present. In addition\, together with the Historical Museum\, she co-edited and produced the memoir of local artist Elizabeth Eaton Burton entitled My Santa Barbara Scrap Book and wrote two Noticias\, their historical journal. She is also a regular contributor to the Montecito Journal Magazine writing the column entitled “Mansions and Moguls.” \nEclectic in her interests\, Hattie’s articles run the gamut from ranches to mansions\, murder to delinquency\, and elegant hotels to auto camps. This two-volume book contains nearly 600 images\, some of which have never been published. The publication explores the geologic origins of the island and traces the cultural history from the native inhabitants\, over 13\,000 years ago\, to the establishment of the Channel Islands National Park in 1980 and its current efforts to preserve and protect the island. \n“John Gherini weaves natural history\, cultural history\, and his own family’s generations on Santa Cruz Island into a fully-realized tapestry of one of the most complex and beautiful locations among our National Parks. This is more than a splendid coffee-table book; it educates even while it illuminates.” — James F. Brooks \nAbout the speaker:\nJohn Gherini\, born and raised in Santa Barbara\, California\, comes from a long lineage of attorneys. Previous to the current book\, he authored Santa Cruz Island: A History of Conflict and Diversity along with several articles and lectured about Santa Cruz Island’s storied history. Santa Cruz Island has been a large part of his life\, as it was for his father\, grandfather\, great-grandfather\, and great-great-grandfather. DESCRIPTION:Our members and friends are invited to join us to celebrate the re-opening of\nThe Fernald Mansion\nSaturday\, January 28\nOpen House\, 1:00 – 3:00 PM \nLocation: 414 West Montecito Street\, Santa Barbara \nAn outstanding example of the Victorian Queen Anne style of architecture in Santa Barbara is the Charles Fernald home at 414 West Montecito Street. \nSheriff\, attorney\, judge\, mayor\, Charles Fernald was one of the city’s most prominent figures in the last half of the 19th century.  The house\, with many of its original furnishings\, was saved from demolition and moved to its present site by the Santa Barbara Historical Museum in 1959 and today is open for public tours. \nMembers are complimentary and are welcome to bring guests.
