Wrapping herself in romanticized Spanish tradition\, she nevertheless bobbed her hair to create the institutions that prepared the way for the Santa Barbara of today. \nThe Way It Was ~ Santa Barbara Comes of Age offers a journey into the past that explores the mountain trails\, joins elaborate celebrations for famous visitors\, and revels in the mania created by the town’s first horseless carriages. Readers will also meet a quintet of colorful characters whose enthusiasm\, vision\, and work created the underpinnings of today’s town and contributed greatly to Santa Barbara’s coming of age. \n\nAbout the Author/ Speaker\nFor the past 12 years\, Hattie Beresford has written a local history column for the Montecito Journal called “The Way It Was\,” where she has been able to indulge her long-standing interest in the people and events of Santa Barbara’s past which determined its present. In addition\, together with the Historical Museum\, she co-edited and produced the memoir of local artist Elizabeth Eaton Burton entitled My Santa Barbara Scrap Book and wrote two Noticias\, their historical journal. She is also a regular contributor to the Montecito Journal Magazine writing the column entitled “Mansions and Moguls.” \nEclectic in her interests\, Hattie’s articles run the gamut from ranches to mansions\, murder to delinquency\, and elegant hotels to auto camps. Stories behind transportation\, entertainment\, philanthropy\, and celebrations have all found expression through her pen. This volume contains a small collection of the fascinating stories of Santa Barbara’s yesteryears. \n  \n  \n

This two-volume book contains nearly 600 images\, some of which have never been published. The publication explores the geologic origins of the island and traces the cultural history from the native inhabitants\, over 13\,000 years ago\, to the establishment of the Channel Islands National Park in 1980 and its current efforts to preserve and protect the island. \n“John Gherini weaves natural history\, cultural history\, and his own family’s generations on Santa Cruz Island into a fully-realized tapestry of one of the most complex and beautiful locations among our National Parks. This is more than a splendid coffee-table book; it educates even while it illuminates.” — James F. Brooks \nAbout the speaker:\nJohn Gherini\, born and raised in Santa Barbara\, California\, comes from a long lineage of attorneys. Previous to the current book\, he authored Santa Cruz Island: A History of Conflict and Diversity along with several articles and lectured about Santa Cruz Island’s storied history. Santa Cruz Island has been a large part of his life\, as it was for his father\, grandfather\, great-grandfather\, and great-great-grandfather. While growing up\, he often traveled to the island on various boats and was on the Hodge when it sank in 1976. He spent time\, particularly during the summers\, building and repairing fences\, herding sheep\, sacking wool\, and doing other ranch work. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk about Betsy Green’s latest book\, Mesapedia\, the first history of the Mesa area of Santa Barbara. \nThe history of Santa Barbara’s Mesa is closely linked with the waters of the Pacific that mark its southern border: a picturesque lighthouse and a loyal lady who guided ships to safety for decades\, a clipper ship captain who watched the sea from a cupola atop his Mesa home\, a Chumash villa overlooking the beach\, a Spanish fort with cannons ready to defend the harbor\, shipwrecks\, beached whales\, a road called Cliff Drive that is nowhere near the cliff\, and a famous rock on the beach. \nMesa resident historian\, Betsy J. Green\, has been researching and writing about the history of the Mesa since 2012. The author of four local history books\, Green spent her formative years as an editor at World Book Encyclopedia and Reader’s Digest. She also writes the Way Back When history column for Edhat.com.
