In 1912 they settled in Santa Barbara and within a year had built one of the most impressive studios on the coast. Spreading their wings\, the Flying A became of one the largest employers while attracting some of the industry’s top directors\, actors\, and writers. From historic adobes to magnificent mansions\, sandy beaches to mountain peaks\, their cameras cranked out over 1\,000 westerns\, dramas\, and comedies projecting visions of Santa Barbara on theater screens around the world. Yet\, before their tenth anniversary\, they were headed for bankruptcy and by 1921 were gone. Historian Neal Graffy will explore their history and their legacy which continues to influence the movies and television shows of today. \n\nAbout Neal Graffy\nAn accomplished author and ever-popular historian\, he has written many monographs and books\, including our signature book\, Historic Santa Barbara.  In fact\, he has MANY wonderful books for sale here at our Museum.  Active in the historical community\, Neal has served as a board member of our Museum\, as chairman of the Santa Barbara County Landmarks Commission\, board member of the Mission Canyon Association\, and president of the Santa Barbara Corral of Westerners.  He is\, also\, a founding member E Clampus Vitus. \n

Fremont “captured” Santa Barbara without firing a shot and less than three weeks later met Gen. Andres Pico and ended the Mexican-American war in California \nWell\, that’s according to legend. Frémont\, and his recently assembled California Battalion were encamped some 20 miles below Mission San Juan Bautista. Their goal? Head south and liberate Santa Barbara and then Los Angeles from the forces of General José María Flores. \nTo do so\, for the next twenty-three days Frémont and his men would embark on an historic and nearly comical march of 230 miles culminating in a Christmas Day descent from the Santa Ynez mountains in a torrential rainstorm to the foothills of La Goleta Rancho. DESCRIPTION:A talk by Janet Sands\nThe California missions tell a far more interesting story than you might have imagined. \nAuthor Janet Dowling Sands\, will speak about her book\, On a Mission\, a beautifully illustrated volume that takes you back to the landscapes and native cultures encountered by the first Europeans who explored California’s beautiful though dangerous coast. \nOn a Mission describes how the clash of empires and beginnings of globalization led to the missions’ founding—Spain’s final colonial endeavor. After Mexican independence\, the Californio culture of rancheros and vaqueros flourished\, setting the foundation for modern California’s open\, blended society. Learn how the missions were built and later saved from near-complete oblivion\, about the origins of Mission Style\, the rare art in the missions\, and so much more. She is an accomplished photographer and watercolorist\, an avid collector of American art\, and a lifelong student of history\, art\, and the natural world. She has traveled extensively and has called many different cities home over the years\, including Maastricht\, Paris\, New York\, Santa Barbara\, and\, most recently\, Flagstaff\, Arizona. \nAs a businesswoman and philanthropist\, Ms. Sands spent many years working to improve science education for children and to support scientific outreach for the public. She was nominated Santa Barbara Woman of the Year in 2014 for her role in the successful school-community partnership “Science Matters.” \nWhile serving as president of the Santa Barbara Corral of Westerners International\, Ms. Sands created a popular series of lectures on lesser-known aspects of California history. Her own program “Visions of the West” explored the connection of Western American art to discovery\, science\, and the preservation of native cultures and natural landscapes; her program about the context and legacy of the California missions ultimately gave rise to this book.

SUMMARY:Talk: Military Artists in California during the Mexican War

Members enter free\, guests are $5.\nRESERVE NOW \nIn this presentation the speakers will explore the personal experiences and artistic renderings of three military figures who produced important visual evidence of California during the 1840s. They were William Rich Hutton\, William Myers\, and Alfred Sully. All three produced vivid images of life in California during the 1840s. While some of their works have been widely reproduced\, others have been relatively undiscovered. The complete body of their works offers a unique glimpse of the way in which the American newcomers saw the land and the people of this region. Their personal experiences and artistic work foreshadowed the contradictory tensions that resulted from the encounter between Americans and Californios as a result of the U.S. conquest. \n\nRose Marie Beebe is Professor of Spanish literature at Santa Clara University and Robert M. Senkewicz is Professor of  History at Santa Clara University. Together they have collaborated on a number of books on the history of Spanish and Mexican California including\, The History of Alta California\, Lands of Promise and Despair: Chronicles of Early California\, 1535–1846; Testimonios: Early California through the Eyes of Women\, 1815–1848; and “To Toil in That Vineyard of the Lord”: Contemporary Scholarship on Junípero Serra; and Junípero Serra: California\, Indians\, and the Transformation of a Missionary (University of Oklahoma Press\, 2015). Their current project is on Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’s five-volume “Recuerdos históricos y personales….” They are in the process of translating and annotating this very important manuscript. \nBeebe and Senkewicz have received numerous teaching and scholarship awards at Santa Clara University. In 2015 they were recognized with the University Award for Sustained Excellence in Scholarship. They have also received awards from The Bancroft Library\, the Historical Society of Southern California\, the California Mission Studies Association\, the California Council for the Promotion of History. Beebe received a year-long fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the Vallejo project.

SUMMARY:1969:  The Santa Barbara Oil Spill & Birth of the Environmental Movement
DESCRIPTION:By Marc McGinnes \nOn January 28\, 1969\, a blowout at Union Oil’s Platform A caused three million gallons of oil to surge into the sea floor of the Santa Barbara Channel.   Over the next ten days the spill left an 800-square-mile stain on the ocean’s surface.  This disaster – forever a part of our local history – affected our coastline from Pismo Beach to Oxnard and beyond\, killing thousands of birds\, fish and marine mammals along with leaving large portions of Santa Barbara County dealing with the aftereffects for years. \nThe public outrage led to legislation and ultimately the birth of the modern environmental movement in Santa Barbara. \nMarc McGinnes\, Professor Emeritus and a founding member of UC Santa Barbara’s Environmental Studies Program\, will discuss the central role that our community has played in launching and sustaining the environmental movement through the past 50 years\, and the pivotal role it will play into the future. \nReservation required.  Members are complimentary\, guests $5. \n\nAbout The Speaker:\nMarc McGinnes was a leading founder of the Community Environmental Council and the Environmental Defense Center.  He is a founding member of the Environmental Studies Program at the University of California\, Santa Barbara (UCSB)\, where he developed and taught ten courses\, including the nation’s longest-running undergraduate course in environmental law and policy. The winner of numerous teaching awards\, he incorporated into the curriculum lessons learned from his experience as one of the country’s earliest practitioners of public interest environmental law. \n  \nHe is the author of In Love with Earth: Testimonies and Heartsongs of an Environmental Elder.
