What was it like to live through Santa Barbara’s greatest natural disaster?  Historian Betsy Green tells the story of the 1925 earthquake through the words of those who were there and experienced acts of heroism, close calls and demonstrated the community spirit which rebuilt a shattered city.  It is through these stories that Betsy will bring fresh perspectives to an oft-told tale.

Betsy Green is the well-known author of the acclaimed Way Back When book series of Santa Barbara history as well as other works.

Join us for a walking tour that will lead you to the sites of buildings that crumbled, rescues and recovery, and resilient structures that inspired the city’s iconic Spanish Colonial Revival style.  Discover how Santa Barbara transformed tragedy into opportunity—and how the quake reshaped not just the skyline, but the spirit of the community.

The tour will begin at the Museum with a glass of wine at the Museum.

Fiesta History Celebration

Celebrate over a century of Old Spanish Days Fiesta in our community with our latest exhibition Project Fiesta: Santa Barbara News-Press Edition with tacos, cocktails, music, and dancingThe evening will include lively performances by the 2025 Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta, Mariachi Alcala, latin jazz band Mezcal Martini and dancing with DJ Adam. Guests are encouraged to dress in festive Fiesta attire.

Our exhibition is dedicated in memory of our friend Erin Graffy de Garcia. Erin was a tireless advocate for preserving Santa Barbara’s incredible history, and most recently, our efforts to acquire the Santa Barbara News-Press archive.
